Plant a tree at your home and help save the Planet!

There is a movement developing that urges each one of us to plant a tree to help replace those being destroyed by loggers, palm oil and soya producers and over intensive farming. But, how can someone without a large garden plant a tree, especially someone with a rather small outdoor living space?

Planting a tree, planting a hedge growing a shrub or two can be done in a very small area of patio, veranda or bijou deck, whatever the size of ones outdoor living space there is a plant for you. Simply replacing artificial ‘potted’ Bay trees with natural plants will help!

Purchasing a limited size tree of traditional British origin  is simple, chat with your local plantsman, nursery or garden centre staff. Trees as common as Mountain Ash, with their lovely orange berries – much in favour with your local blackbird and thrush population - are cheerful and will bring back memories of long country walks and sunny days. Also, Roses, Bay or Camellia including ‘standards’ will do well in planters on a veranda. Exotic plants such as Olive trees and Figs will grow happily too, just make sure when purchasing that they are frost resistant.

Fancy a hedge but don’t have much of a garden? Easy, try Box or Yew, both will grow in a planter, for effect a few planters planted with low lying Box or taller Yew will outline your sitting out space and provide a degree of privacy. Both plants are capable of being shaped and trimmed, many a Box has been shaped into a cone, mushroom shape, and even animal shaped topiary. Both plants are slow growing and will not reach for the sky!

With innovation there is no reason why the smallest garden space cannot be made into a green and beautiful place in which one can sit and enjoy a fine day.

For people who love to see bees at work try interspersing the Box or Yew with Lavender and other scented summer plants, whilst trees soak up Co2 bees pollinate every plant in the garden, and far beyond.

On the topic of enjoying ones outdoor living space, do remember to take advantage of the opportunity to sit out in the fresh air and rest easy.
