Teak's properties made it perfect for the steamer chair of a bygone age

In a recent blog, I talked a little about the origins of teak, its sustainability and longevity and its long tradition in boat and ship building, including how the wood was used on the deck of the Titanic, and how Titanic’s teak is still almost as good today as it was when the ship sank, despite being under water for a little over one hundred years.

You’ll remember that the reason for its popularity on the ocean is due to teak’s naturally high oil content, giving it a great resistance to heat, cold, insects, mould and so on. Continuing with the nautical theme, I’d like to give you a little more information about our classic teak steamer chair. And yes, these are probably the chairs we talk about being rearranged on the Titanic. Teak though, has enhanced all kinds of boats, yachts, clippers and even aircraft carriers.

Today, I’d like to chat a little about teak patio furniture. There is still a little brightness to be had at this time of year and the patio may still be getting a little use. It also won’t be too long before we start thinking about next season, but there’s time for that yet. Hopefully, this year’s garden parties were sunny and warm and peaceful; less Queen of Hearts or Mad Hatter, and more Mrs Dalloway. Strangely, it’s hard to think of a peaceful literary tea party at all. When I think of afternoon dining in my garden, I want to have a sunny mental image along the lines of Cecily and Gwendolen’s meeting in The Importance of Being Earnest, as icy as that turned out to be for a while, but all I can visualise is Miss Marple.
