The properties of teak

Teak is a deciduous hardwood tree from the highlands of south-east Asia, it does not come from tropical rainforests and is grown in monitored plantations

Teakwood has a naturally high oil content which makes it both stable and resistant to rotting when exposed to climatic extremes.

For several centuries these special qualities have made teakwood the preferred choice for marine decking and construction, and is the reason that it is considered the premium timber for outdoor furniture.

  1. Very interesting and something else I did not know about this type of wood. Going to do more research and find out how hard it is to get Garden Sets and things of that nature in the States. Great site and great information. Thank you!

  2. It's incredible how this wood can survive in our chilly climate given that it comes from a tropical environment. Learning about the provenance of natural materials is fascinating and makes it so much nicer when you own something and know where it's come from.

  3. I had to read all your posts today and I've taken onboard a lot of useful information. I plan to move to a warmer climate in the future, however there is a rainy season so I will need garden furniture that can withstand these extreme changes. Teakwood sounds ideal and I have bookmarked chairsandtables.co.uk as my go-to source.

  4. Teak is definitely the answer for me - low maintenance and long lasting. I read elsewhere on your site that teak doesn't require oiling or waterproofing. It makes purchasing teak furniture seem more of an investment when you know it's going to last!
